Think of your CV as a Dating app profile.

Your CV is and your profile on a dating app like Tinder serve similar purposes and are treated in very similar ways. So, the next time you’re in the job market, consider creating a new dating app profile.

Getting a job is like getting into a serious relationship

Let’s face it, dating and getting a job might happen in different markets, but the rules of the game are the same. For one, there are strangers on both ends each seeking the perfect fit with the least incurred pain, if any at all.

In this potentially life changing search, there’s so much to consider:

  • Will they notice you in the ocean of competitive potentials?

  • Will they like you as much as you like them?

  • Are they the right fit for you?

  • Will this relationship be the best thing that has happened?

But before all of that, how do you even begin to put yourself out there?

These questions and more elevate the insecurities of being in the job market, whether you’re joining after an inspiring educational journey or are back from an insightful experience elsewhere. Without the right frame of mind and the correct tools, you will struggle to be found by that seemingly elusive ideal partner.

Tailor your CV to be found by "The One"

Having a clear and tailored Curriculum Vitae (CV), even with an overused template, is likely to put you ahead of other candidates in numerous job applications. Be a brand. Develop the primary skill of defining and revealing your unique qualities through word choices on your CV.

Also, first impressions do not last. How can they? It takes six seconds to be considered for the next phase in the recruitment process or you’re rejected.

The Do's and Don'ts of an ATS

Consider the dating app profile: everyone is met with the same questions and options for identity, dating preferences, interests and ideal qualities. As mundane and overused as these questions and formats are, they help. We can easily identify the attributes we are looking for and swiftly, without remorse, swipe left if unimpressed. How else can candidates be justly compared?

Hence the use of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) which are the software’s that read through all CVs and sort them into two piles: the “To be considered.” pile, and the “To be rejected.” pile. According to Jobscan, 98% of the top largest companies use an ATS program. Whilst the decision to reject a candidate is seldom left up to an ATS, the work of a recruiter is simplified much like yours on a dating app.

As your friend and advisor in such significant matters, I suggest the following:

The Do’s:

  • Use identifiable subheadings and key words such as “work experience”, “education”, “skills”, “managed”, “manufactured”, “designed” and so on.

  • Use legible font and size like Arial or Sans, size 11 or 12.

  • Save your CV in pdf and docx version.

  • Keep the number of pages between 1 and 3.

The Don’ts:

  • Refrain from columns and tables, an ATS cannot read these.

  • The same is true for headers and footers.

  • Including your ID number or picture only increases your risk of identity theft – not saying it will happen, but it can.

  • An unprofessional email address (one which includes a number or a peculiar name) automatically puts you in the “We regret to inform you” pile.

Having said that, avoid the trap of doing everything just to be liked by everyone. You don’t have to enjoy fatiguing walks or the aquarium. Being ATS friendly does not mean “fits everyone’s brief”. Accentuate your fascination with museums and amusement with art galleries. Stand apart and be captivating to the distinct few. It’s not about finding any job but about #FindingTheRightJob.

Dating, much like searching for work, can feel like a decade of lamentation or a moment of pleasure. It is pivotal. You are looking to make a living, possibly raise children and take care of a home. So, the next time you’re in the market, be deliberately different. Proudly display your multi-faceted CV. Because, what you really want, is a specific few to swipe right.
